Schools across the UK are opening late after England’s 1am World Cup match against Mexico, following a request from head coach Thomas Tuchel to let pupils watch. England secured their place in the round of 16 and will face Mexico on Monday due to the time difference, with the kick-off scheduled for 1am; if the game goes to penalties, it could last until nearly 4am. After England’s last-gasp win over DR Congo on Wednesday, Tuchel said, “There’s so much school to go to,” adding that the World Cup happens every four years. Education Secretary Bridget Phillipson urged attendance on time, telling BBC Newsnight she would not make requests around bedtime but asked families to try to get children to school. A number of schools have nonetheless allowed late arrival, plan replay screenings, or show highlights in the morning. Examples include replays at 9am, highlights in assembly, an as-live screening at 7.40am, and an automatic raffle for arriving children.
