Suspected militants kill 2 police officers guarding polio workers in Pakistan
Suspected militants in northwestern Pakistan shot and killed two police officers guarding polio vaccination workers during a door-to-door campaign, officials said. The attack occurred Tuesday in Mohmand, a district of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province bordering Afghanistan. Officers were traveling to a nearby village to protect vaccination teams when they came under fire from attackers riding a motorcycle; a third officer was wounded. No group claimed responsibility immediately. Pakistani Taliban and other militants have previously targeted anti-polio drives, spreading claims that vaccination efforts are part of a Western plot to sterilize children. Separately, militants abducted four polio workers in Tank the day before, according to provincial authorities. Pakistan began a nationwide drive to vaccinate 24 million children against polio.
