Sunday, Sept. 6, 2026 is remembered for the fatal shooting of President William McKinley. In 1901, anarchist Leon Czolgosz shot McKinley at the Pan-American Exposition in Buffalo, New York; McKinley died eight days later and was succeeded by his vice president, Theodore Roosevelt. Other events for Sept. 6 include the 1522 arrival in Spain of the Victoria under Juan Sebastian de Elcano, completing the first circumnavigation, and the start of the first Battle of the Marne in 1914 during World War I. The date also marks later milestones, from the 1972 resumption of the Munich Olympics to Liz Truss beginning as U.K. prime minister in 2022.
