When is Labor Day? This year, as late as possible

Memorial Day and Labor Day this year stretch “summer” to its longest calendar run. Memorial Day falls on May 25, the earliest date it can occur, while Labor Day arrives on Sept. 7, the latest possible day for the holiday under Congress’ rule of the first Monday in September. With those bookends timed at their extremes, there are more than 106 days in between. In 2025’s wake, next year Labor Day shifts slightly earlier to Sept. 6 and Memorial Day moves to May 31, shortening summer 2026 to 99 days. The next widest gap won’t happen until 2037.
