Wildcats, Tigers go 2-0 on first day of Southwestern Classic

Fruita Monument and Grand Junction got their Southwestern Classic underway by snapping long losing streaks on Friday, Sept. 25, at Canyon View Park. The Wildcats (Fruita Monument) entered on a two-game skid and won twice—5-4 over Green Mountain and 8-1 over Niwot. Grand Junction’s Tigers, coming off a four-game slide, beat Niwot 10-4 and Thornton 11-6. Central also competed, losing both games on the first day—14-0 to Pueblo West and 16-11 to Green Mountain. Detailed scoring swings included Fruita’s five runs in the first two innings vs. Green Mountain, and Grand Junction’s large late innings against Thornton.
