Airbus readies for decision on 'simple' A220 stretch to match customer demands
Airbus is preparing a decision on a proposed “simple” stretch of the A220 that would add around five rows of seats, targeting about 185 passengers capacity if it proceeds with the so-called -500 variant. Speaking at a media briefing at Airbus Canada’s Mirabel production centre in Montreal on 23 June, Guillaume Chevasson said Airbus has accelerated internal assessments and has a focus on the project in 2026, though a launch decision may not come this year. He said customer feedback is pushing for a faster, lower-risk solution, with trade studies continuing to balance additional capacity, weight and range. Chevasson stressed Airbus sees no need to unseat Pratt & Whitney, warning it would be an “expensive divorce” and pointing to durability improvements on the PW1500G. P&W’s Scott Kreamer said the engine position is still being evaluated, while remaining committed to the A220 programme.
