American Airlines flight aborts Miami takeoff after business jet enters runway
American Airlines flight 308 aborted its Miami, Florida departure after a business jet entered the active runway, nearly causing a serious runway incursion. The incident occurred around 6 p.m. ET on Friday, when controllers were moving runway traffic by ATC instructions as the aircraft converged within about a third of a mile. American said the AA crew discontinued takeoff after visually observing another aircraft on the runway. The FAA said the other aircraft was crossing “without authorization” and is investigating. ATC audio captured the confusion: the business jet pilot indicated he thought clearance was for him after hearing a “cross runway eight” instruction. The business jet was reported as NetJets Flight EJA434, and a NetJets spokesperson said it was not under NetJets’ operational control at the time. The American flight later departed for Bermuda, arriving about two hours late.
