Brits travelling to Spain warned of rule change that could see them denied entry
British nationals traveling to Spain could be turned away at the border under a rule change taking effect in 2026. The new financial requirements for non-EU travelers are €122.10 per person per day, with a minimum stay total of €1,089.90. Spain’s update reflects Schengen rules since Britain left the EU, rendering Britons as third-state travelers. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs says travelers must prove sufficient funds or the ability to obtain them, with accepted forms including cash, traveler’s checks, a credit card with a bank statement, or an up-to-date bank book; bank letters or online bank statements are not accepted. Separately, the EU’s Entry/Exit System (EES) rollout continues, causing airport delays, with six-hour waits reported at Lisbon and Lanzarote. Airlines such as Jet2 and Ryanair have urged suspending the rollout until after the summer to ease peak-season pressures.
