China Southern strikes landmark deal for Boeing cargo jets
China Southern Airlines secured a landmark Boeing cargo deal by ordering seven freighter aircraft, including five new 777-8s, which Boeing expects to reach the market in 2028. The airline announced the purchase Friday on the Shanghai Stock Exchange, describing it as the first known 777-8 freighter order by a mainland Chinese carrier. It also marked the first orders in years for Boeing products from China after a prolonged period of trade tensions with the United States. The article notes that China reopened Boeing’s market after a May visit by President Donald Trump to Beijing, during which China pledged to buy 200 Boeing aircraft. China Southern also ordered two conventional 777 cargo jets and took options for three additional 777-8s. The list price totals $3.6 billion, though the airline expects to pay less with discounts. Boeing is aiming to deliver the first 777-8 in 2028 after development delays, while Airbus reports 103 A350F orders.
