Two U.S. pilots died after a military helicopter crash in Salado, Texas, on Wednesday, Aug. 12, 2026. The AH-64 Apache, operating out of Fort Hood, crashed around 1:35 p.m. local time, sparking a major fire that grew out of control and led to the evacuation of the area. Bell County Sheriff’s Office spokesperson Cliff Coleman said the helicopter did not collide with anything or anyone on the ground and appeared to have hit violently in a field; no cause has been confirmed. Both pilots were taken to a hospital already dead. Texas Gov. Greg Abbott posted condolences to the families.
