Emergency services rise to the occasion' - Shock after fatal Workington house fire
Emergency services responded to a fatal house fire in Workington that lasted about six hours and killed an elderly resident. Crews from Workington, Maryport and Whitehaven were called to a home on Poole Road at 6:31pm on Thursday, and a joint incident command unit from Penrith also attended. Firefighters used three fire engines, two breathing apparatus, two hose reel jets and a positive pressure ventilation fan to extinguish the blaze, with police confirming the death of a man in his 80s at 8:05pm. The local council member Barbara Cannon said services did what was necessary despite the strain, and described the community in Salterbeck and Workington as shocked. Separately, Cumbria Fire and Rescue Service reported a 48.4% rise in fires in the second quarter of 2025 versus the same period in 2024. A joint investigation with the fire service is ongoing, and police asked witnesses to contact them, citing incident number 224 on 25 June.
