Ex-Highlander's father-son fishing trip goes awry
A father-son fishing trip near Green Island, off the coast at Waldronville, went awry when their jetski lost power and they were left stranded at sea. Ryan Nicholas and his son Marama were fishing around 11:30am when the boat shut down, prompting them to call for help. They were later towed back to shore by the fishing boat Cloud Break, but the tow carried them into Careys Bay, involving a detour of more than three hours. Marama said the crew reached their location after a 45-minute wait and then towed the jetski while the pair boarded the rescue vessel for a northward journey along the Otago Peninsula, passing Taiaroa Head. Both said they were fortunate, though they returned without keeping any fish because their catch was undersized. Nicholas previously played for the Highlanders from 2002 to 2004 and later represented Japan from 2008 to 2012.
