FCC is easing drone rules, but DJI drones are still left grounded

The FCC's latest move narrows the market by granting a narrow exemption for truly toy drones, while leaving mainstream manufacturers like DJI largely sidelined. The June 15 rule allows only toy drones under 150 grams, with 100 meters range, 300 feet altitude, and without GPS, internet, or cameras. The Pentagon argues the carve-out avoids national-security concerns that would enable modern camera drones, effectively excluding DJI's typical product line from relief. Nevertheless, even the limited exemption fails to restore full DJI access, since broader restrictions under the FY2025 NDAA remain in place.
