Foods to Break Ground on Commercial Land-Based Gim Cultivation Facility, Pioneering Sustainable Production of Korean Seaweed

CJ Foods plans to break ground in August on a commercial land-based gim cultivation facility in Cheonan, Chungcheongnam-do, South Korea, as it advances year-round supply of Korean seaweed. The project follows the company’s 2021 success cultivating gim in a 3-ton laboratory tank and a 2022 patent for a land-optimized gim variety. Completion is targeted for the first half of 2027, with bibigo™ gim products destined for global markets, including the United States. The facility will feature multiple tanks and cultivation systems, and CJ aims to develop a shared-growth model with local governments and fishing communities to expand sustainable production.
