How The McDonnell Douglas MD-80 Outlasted The Jet Built To Replace It

The McDonnell Douglas MD-90 was designed to replace the MD-80, but the “new” jet entered service in 1995 and left the market first—retired in June 2020. The MD-80, introduced earlier, exited in September 2019, nine months later, despite being considered obsolete. The contrast is stark in production: McDonnell Douglas built 1,191 MD-80s versus just 116 MD-90s, a ten-to-one gap that shaped each aircraft’s commercial fate. The MD-80 was widely operated—American Airlines ultimately amassed 362 by 2003—supporting large-scale parts and maintenance that the much smaller MD-90 fleet never achieved.
