JetBlue flight collides with drone in New York
A JetBlue flight reported hitting a drone while attempting to land Monday morning at John F. Kennedy International Airport, according to air traffic control audio. The aircraft was traveling from Las Vegas to New York when the incident was reported, and JetBlue said the flight landed without incident before passengers safely deplaned. The airline then removed the aircraft from service for inspection, stating there was no damage or evidence of a collision. The Federal Aviation Administration said the collision report occurred while the plane was at about 3,000 feet on final approach. Audio described the pilot notifying controllers shortly after being cleared, saying, “we collided with a drone… right above the cockpit.” The FAA said it will handle the investigation. The article also notes that drones generally may fly legally below 400 feet but must avoid controlled airspace near airports, and unauthorized operators can face fines or criminal charges.
