JetBlue pilot reports hitting drone as plane approached JFK airport to land Monday morning
JetBlue pilot reports hitting a drone as his aircraft approached JFK for landing Monday morning, prompting an FAA investigation. The agency said the incident occurred when JetBlue Airlines Flight 948 was passing through about 3,000 feet (914 meters) around 7:15 a.m. local time as it crossed the coastline. The Airbus A321 flew overnight into New York from Las Vegas, and the plane landed safely without declaring an emergency. Afterward, the aircraft was removed from service for inspection, and both the airline and FAA said the post-flight check found no evidence of damage or a collision. According to ATC.com, the pilot told air traffic control, “We collided with a drone back there in the turn,” adding that the impact was “right above the cockpit.” JetBlue said customers deplaned normally and it will assist any relevant inquiries. The FAA cites frequent drone sightings near airports and notes violations can bring fines, loss of license, or seizure of drones.
