JetBlue pilot reports striking a drone while landing at JFK airport
A JetBlue pilot reported striking a drone while on approach to John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York, according to officials. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) said the aircraft landed safely, and a post-flight inspection found no damage. The FAA has launched an investigation into the incident. The report comes amid other recent close encounters between drones and commercial aircraft, including a United Airlines pilot’s near-collision with a drone approaching Newark Liberty International Airport in New Jersey just days earlier. In the JetBlue case, the FAA said the collision was reported at nearly 3,000 ft (900 m) around 07:15 EDT (11:15 GMT). JetBlue said customers deplaned normally and the plane was removed from service for inspection. The FAA estimates it receives more than 100 monthly reports of drone sightings near airports and warns operators may face stiff fines and criminal charges, including possible jail time.
