Jetstar risks backlash over new carry-on bag fees

Jetstar is rolling out changes to carry-on baggage that could spark backlash, with critics calling it a “cash grab.” From February 2, the airline will end its 7kg carry-on limit and adopt a size-based model used by some European low-cost carriers such as Ryanair. Passengers can bring one small under-seat bag up to 10kg for free, while larger items will be charged. Overhead lockers will cost between $25 and $52 one-way, depending on route, under a “limited” priority carry-on option that also includes priority boarding. Jetstar says the model follows “extensive research and feedback” and will streamline boarding and help flights depart on time while keeping fares low. Analysts warn the extra fees could push Jetstar fares closer to competitors.
