July to see return of passenger flights between Fort Frances and Thunder Bay - Wings Magazine
July marks the return of scheduled passenger flights between Fort Frances and Thunder Bay, highlighting renewed regional connectivity. North Star Air, based in Thunder Bay, will operate the route after Bearskin Airlines ceased regular service in 2024. Kenora has already begun flights with North Star since mid-January, and Dryden is negotiating a future contract. Fort Frances officials describe reliable air links as critical to economic growth, healthcare access, tourism, education, and keeping the community connected. Ticket pricing for the new service is set in three tiers: Saver at $450 if booked seven days in advance, Thrift at $550 with three days’ notice, and Flex at $799 with refundable options. Saver and Thrift are non-refundable, and changes carry a $50 fee. The project’s success, officials say, hinges on sustained ridership, with Fort Frances Mayor Andrew Hallikas noting the town will back the service while monitoring costs. Ghosh added that the town hopes strong demand will enable fare stability and pave the way for additional routes. Residents are encouraged to use the service regularly to demonstrate viability and support ongoing connectivity for the region.
