Major incident stood down after huge fire at Widnes recycling facility

A major incident was stood down after a large fire at a recycling facility in Widnes, according to Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service. Firefighters were called to Everite Road on Monday, when thick plumes of black smoke rose above the site. A total of 20 fire engines were deployed from Cheshire, with additional supporting crews from Merseyside, North Wales, and Greater Manchester. The fire was declared a major incident at around 6pm, and residents were told to keep windows and doors closed. Authorities believe about 450 tonnes of waste were involved out of 550 tonnes stored on site. By the Tuesday morning update, the major incident status had been stood down, though crews remained overnight using water jets to cool burning debris. At around 4am, attendance was reduced to three Cheshire fire engines and four special appliances. Road closures were expected to remain, with drivers advised to check routes; Cheshire Police assisted with closures and reassurance.
