NATO fighter jets scrambled as Russian nuclear bombers spotted off UK coast
NATO fighter jets scrambled as Russian nuclear bombers spotted off UK coast says NATO scrambled fighter aircraft after Russian nuclear-capable bombers flew close to the UK coast. The incident is linked to Russian nuclear drills conducted to the north of Shetland during the week, according to the report. Tu-160 bombers, described as the largest and heaviest aircraft of their kind to enter operational service, flew a 16-hour mission over the Barents and Norwegian Seas. NATO F-35 fifth-generation fighters intercepted the Russian bombers, which were also escorted by MiG-31 interceptor aircraft. The Norwegian Sea is identified as lying north of Shetland, between Norway and Iceland. Moscow also said the Tu-160s practiced in-flight refuelling over neutral waters between Norway and Iceland.
