Inside The Desert Facility That Revives & Scraps Airbus A380s Simultaneously
The Teruel Airport facility in eastern Spain has become Europe’s central hub where Airbus A380s are both revived for maintenance and dismantled for parts. Operated by Tarmac Aerosave, the site opened in 2013 and now has capacity for about 140 aircraft and 20 engines. The most recent expansion occurred in October 2024, adding a fourth A380-capable hangar because existing capacity was fully booked. The site benefits from its dry, high-altitude climate and a workforce of more than 230 people, with 50 more roles planned for 2026. Two pathways run at Teruel: heavy maintenance and cabin refurbishment to return planes to service, and dismantling for parts with engines and landing gear removed. The facility also handles the engines, landing gear, and other components associated with A380s. Tarmac Aerosave operates similarly equipped sites at Tarbes and Toulouse in France, and has recycled more than 220 aircraft since 2007. About 80 percent of aircraft passing through return to service, underscoring the site's dual role in maintenance and shortages.
