Oliver Tree Dies in Rio de Janeiro Helicopter Crash at 32
A mid-air collision between two helicopters over western Rio de Janeiro killed all six people aboard on Sunday morning. One helicopter carried five passengers, including American singer Oliver Tree, who was 32, while the other carried only its pilot. The crash occurred above the Recreio dos Bandeirantes neighborhood in the city’s southwestern zone, and both aircraft came down onto a car dealership’s lot, igniting a fire that burned several electric vehicles before firefighters gained control. Brazilian authorities said both helicopters were operating legally at the time of the crash. Rio de Janeiro's Civil Police confirmed Tree's identity and identified the other victims as Lucas Vignale, Gaspar Prim (Gaspi), Lucas Brito Chaves, and pilots Alexandre Souza and Charles Marsillac. An investigation into the mid-air collision is underway, with flight data being reviewed and a forensic team dispatched to the scene. Investigators have not yet disclosed a probable cause, and authorities stressed that evidence is being gathered from the wreckage and by examining recorded air traffic data. Tree, born Oliver Tree Nickell in Santa Cruz, California, arrived in Brazil for a personal trip and had been promoting a forthcoming project in recent days. Gaspar Prim, known as Gaspi in Argentina, had a substantial following and was widely recognized across Spanish-speaking social media. The forensic results are expected within days as authorities continue to piece together what happened, while tributes flowed from fans and fellow artists across continents.
