Only 255 Were Built, But This Airbus Twinjet Rewrote The Rules Of Ocean Crossings

The Airbus A310-300 helped reshape rules for twin-engine ocean crossings despite only 255 aircraft being built from 1981 to 1998. Certified for 180-minute ETOPS, it enabled revenue transatlantic service on routes that previously demanded three or four engines. Operators including Pan Am, Delta, Air France, TAP Air Portugal, Wardair, and Canadian Airlines flew the type across the Atlantic. With long-range capability—about 5,150 nautical miles for the -300—it proved reliability and economics at scale, building regulator confidence to extend ETOPS limits. Today, around 33 A310s remain, mostly military or cargo, while its ETOPS lineage traces through later 787 and A350 routes.
