See what London looked like 100 years ago, from tourist attractions to East End slums
xCruzo Brief
London’s landmarks still recognizable today have changed dramatically in the details after a century. Photos from 1920s London show Trafalgar Square with fountains built in 1845, designed then for children to play, while Oxford Street is now pedestrianized and—per an October change—no longer allows vehicles between Orchard Street and Great Portland Street. Piccadilly Circus, created in 1819, was already a major crossroads by 1920, with double-decker buses and even bridge traffic on the River Thames. The London Underground opened in 1863 and was marketed as “cooler below.” The Thames waterfront has also transformed, with the London Eye arriving in 1999.
