The Engine Software Tweak That Finally Lets Delta Air Lines Fly The Embraer E175 Into Aspen

Aspen/Pitkin County Airport (ASE) sits at 7,820 feet and punishes aircraft performance in warm weather, long limiting which jets could profitably serve its short runway and strict climb-gradient rules. Delta Air Lines and operating partner SkyWest Airlines finally expanded the Embraer E175 into Aspen with a software-focused change rather than airframe redesign. Embraer, GE and SkyWest developed a Full Authority Digital Engine Control tweak for the GE CF34-8E that delivers 1% to 3% more thrust. Combined with recalibrated takeoff and landing speed schedules, the update helps the E175 meet steep climb requirements while carrying full loads—an upgrade aimed at replacing aging CRJ700s on high-yield routes.
