Tired' pilot tried to land plane with 44-degree tilt

An Air Accident Investigation Unit report says an Aer Lingus pilot who attempted to land with an excessive bank angle “may have been tired.” The January 14, 2025 incident involved an Aer Lingus flight from Faro, Portugal, to Dublin Airport with 146 passengers onboard. Investigators said the aircraft banked 44 degrees during an aborted approach—above the normal 33-degree limit. The commander told investigators he didn’t sleep well and that he may have been tired. Despite controllers asking whether the crew needed “extra track miles” to line up the descent, the aircraft came in too high and too fast. Speed brakes and a manual orbit attempt led to low speed warnings; automatic low-speed protection activated, and the crew recovered by initiating a go-around, then landed safely.
