A California bald eagle named Jackie, an internet sensation and a symbol of the species’ recovery in the state, died after authorities determined bird flu was the primary cause. The California Department of Fish and Wildlife said a necropsy and additional testing found highly pathogenic avian influenza, following treatment at the Ojai Raptor Center in August for ailments including anemia. The director, Chris Eksteen, said necropsy results helped connect findings from her hospitalization. The same wire-style roundup also reported unrelated public safety updates: a Florida man, Dale Smith Jr., was arrested and charged in the murder of former fiancée Michelle Parker after a “People’s Court” episode, and a small dog named Luna was recovered after more than a month missing in Yellowstone.
