Trump flies partway home from Turkey in an old Air Force One
President Donald Trump flew partway home from a NATO summit in Turkey on an older, legacy Air Force One rather than on the new Qatar-gifted aircraft he had arrived in. The swap came amid renewed U.S.-Iran tensions following exchanges of strikes and new U.S. military actions targeting Iran, raising fresh questions about security spending and systems. The U.S. reportedly spent $400 million to retrofit the new jet, which images show lacks some missile detection and countermeasure equipment found on older aircraft. Trump said he chose the legacy plane “for old time’s sake,” and both jets would make an unscheduled stop at Royal Air Force Mildenhall in the U.K. before continuing to the U.S. He denied that Iran-related security concerns drove the decision, while noting he is a top target.
