Uruguay's WC flight delayed by paperwork issue
Uruguay's World Cup flight to the United States was delayed due to missing FIFA-provided charter documentation. The squad, headquartered at Playa del Carmen, was scheduled to fly into Miami, Florida, from Cancun, but departure was postponed as authorities resolved paperwork issues. AUF attributed the setback to factors beyond its control, while FIFA later explained the airline’s permitting error in Mexico caused the delay. FIFA issued a statement clarifying responsibilities and the new departure time of 4:15 p.m. The team later resumed travel plans once the paperwork was completed.
Uruguay later landed in Miami and held a press conference with coach Marcelo Bielsa and captain José María Giménez. Bielsa said the delay would not affect the team's preparation for Monday’s match against Saudi Arabia, and Giménez noted the setback allowed players to rest at their hotel. FIFA's coordination with airports and partners was aimed at expediting arrangements to minimize disruption. Uruguay remains in Group H with Spain, Cape Verde, and Saudi Arabia, highlighting the logistical challenges teams face when FIFA-provided charters encounter administrative hurdles on the road to the World Cup.
