Vietjet reportedly looking to launch Australia domestic operations
Vietjet is reportedly seeking to launch domestic operations in Australia, a move that could make it the first international low-cost carrier in nearly two decades to start an Australian subsidiary. According to a report by the Australian Financial Review published 29 June, the Vietnamese airline applied to regulators for an air operator’s certificate and permission to operate a local business. The report, citing unnamed sources, says Vietjet also applied to base up to 10 Boeing 737 aircraft with its proposed Australian unit, and some local reports suggest the company could launch under a different name. Interest accelerated after slot-allocation results at Sydney International Airport showed more than 2,000 slots allocated to a new, unnamed entrant. Vietjet currently serves Australia from hubs in Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi, including Melbourne, Sydney, Perth and Brisbane. It has subsidiaries in Thailand and launched Vietjet Qazaqstan in 2025, after acquiring Qazaq Air.
