VISUAL history of 20th-century Russia (PICS)
The visual history of 20th-century Russia traces a sequence of upheavals that reshaped the empire into modern Russia. It begins with the First Russian Revolution, triggered on January 22, 1905, when the brutal suppression of a peaceful workers’ demonstration during “Bloody Sunday” led to dozens of deaths and sparked unrest nationwide. After Russia’s defeat in the Russo-Japanese war and intensifying social tensions, authorities made concessions including the establishment of the State Duma, legalization of trade unions, and improved worker conditions. The narrative then covers World War I’s trench warfare and losses, culminating in the February Revolution of early 1917 and the overthrow of Nicholas II. It continues through the Bolsheviks’ armed coup on November 8, 1917, followed by Civil War. The later Soviet era highlights accelerated industrialization, with over 500 industrial facilities built in the USSR between 1929 and 1932.
