Was Lufthansa Right To Hand Seattle Over To Discover Airlines?
Discover Airlines will take over Lufthansa Group’s Seattle operations starting in late March 2027, assuming flights currently operated from Frankfurt and Munich, with service running up to daily. While Seattle will keep nonstop access to Lufthansa Group’s two main German hubs, the flights themselves will be operated by Discover, the group’s leisure-focused brand. The change has an economic logic: Discover can use a leisure-oriented long-haul model to connect Seattle to Lufthansa’s network, and the planned “Ocean Blue” cabins include 1-2-1 Business Class, front-row suites and Starlink. The decision comes as competition for Seattle’s premium travelers intensifies, including Condor on Seattle–Frankfurt, Alaska’s expanding 787 service to Europe, and Delta’s broader investment in Seattle. The concern is that transferring both German routes to a leisure-branded carrier could create openings for rivals to claim the premium role.
