Window Seat Rules: The Aircraft Where Cabin Crew Control The View

On most commercial jets, passengers in window seats can control the shade. But on the Boeing 787 Dreamliner, that power is partly shared with cabin crew. The Dreamliner replaced traditional pull-down blinds with electrochromic glass developed by Gentex with PPG Aerospace. Each seat has individual settings, yet each window is also linked to a flight attendant panel that can set or lock shades across the cabin. Gentex shipped its first dimmable aircraft window shades to PPG in 2007. The glass is designed to be about 60% larger than typical aircraft windows, measuring 10.7 by 18.4 inches, and it can darken through five settings.
