Alaska teen rescued after 3 days in frigid waters reveals tragic end for 2 family members

An Alaska teenager survived after nearly three days in frigid Bering Sea waters following the capsizing of a fishing skiff, but rescuers recovered the bodies of two other family members. Derek Parker Aghnaanga, 15, was found Monday morning about four miles east of St. Lawrence Island on the overturned boat, according to rescuers and relatives. He told rescuers that his cousin slipped away during the night and that his older brother, Sidney Kulowiyi, remained underneath the vessel. The U.S. Coast Guard HC-130 Hercules crew spotted him, dropped a survival raft and equipment, and used flares to guide the Northwest Explorer. Aghnaanga was experiencing hypothermia symptoms and was taken to Nome; the search began Sunday after the family reported them missing.
