The Supreme Court will decide later this month whether to hear a lobster fisherman’s challenge to a government requirement that boats use electronic tracking devices. The case stems from a federal lawsuit filed by Maine lobsterman Frank Thompson, who argued he should not be forced to install a GPS tracker on his boat to keep his fishing license. In 2023, Maine required all federally permitted lobstermen to comply with the new U.S. rule designed to collect data. A federal appeals court denied Thompson’s claim last year, and he appealed. The Supreme Court is scheduled to consider the petition on Sept. 28, raising a Fourth Amendment question.
