Anti-migrant protesters scuffle with police in Gosport after Channel rescue
Anti-migrant protesters scuffled with police in Gosport, Hampshire, as nearly 150 people trying to reach the UK by small boat were expected to be brought ashore. Demonstrators gathered in the south coast town after news spread of the vessel’s arrival, and it was the second time they targeted Gosport amid rumours of rescued people disembarking there. Late Sunday, several rescued people were seen arriving at a marina in Gosport after being transported on two RNLI boats. Ship tracking data said the dinghy was shadowed by French rescue vessels in the Channel until it met RNLI boats in English waters. The Home Office said 149 migrants were believed onboard and said they would be taken to short-term holding facilities in Kent for processing and biometric checks.
