Cull or not to cull: Greenland debates fate of world's slowest shark
xCruzo Brief
Greenland is debating whether to cull Greenland sharks after a proposed plan in the Ilulissat region. Avannaata municipality approved a controversial measure to kill 1,000 sharks, paying 300 krone (about £3,440) per shark heart, aiming to protect fishermen’s income and the catch of halibut and cod. Local fishing teams say the slow but large species tangles in gear and creates expensive losses; one fisher said he’s lost around 6,000 hooks this year and sometimes up to 30,000 Danish krone a day. The plan was later dropped after the government questioned its legality, but the possibility remains. Conservation group ONKN argues culls won’t solve the issue because the sharks migrate up to 1,200 miles (2,000 km) a year.
