Boat sinks in Zimbabwe's Lake Kariba with 95 people on board

Zimbabwean authorities say multiple people are feared dead after a boat carrying 95 people sank on the Kariba dam in Zimbabwe, where rescue operations are underway. Police reported that the vessel capsized on Tuesday with 90 passengers and five crew aboard, but it may have been overloaded. Other accounts suggest a higher figure based on registered ticket sales. Witnesses told AFP that the boat left in the morning in bad weather and may have been hit by a wave and overturned. Lake Kariba, which borders Zambia, is one of the world’s largest man-made reservoirs, supporting transport, fishing, and hydroelectric power for both countries. The AP quoted Zimbabwe’s Civil Protection Unit saying registered ticket sales indicate 114 adults were onboard, with an unknown number of children below ticketing age. A local MP, Mutsa Murombedzi, posted on X calling for officials to release the correct passenger count. Police said more information will be released later.
