Boats compete in 2026 Bay Point Billfish Open with nearly $2 million purse
Boats are competing in the 2026 Bay Point Billfish Open, a major Gulf of Mexico billfishing event with a purse just under $1.9 million. The tournament began Thursday morning in Panama City, Florida, with 86 boats racing offshore in search of tuna, wahoo, dolphin, and especially blue marlin. George Roberts, a co-owner of the Bay Point Billfish Open, said blue marlin is the stated goal and described the event as among the largest in the region. It is the fourth year the tournament has returned, after storm-related disruption helped rebuild the Marina. Organizers expect broad economic reach, with more than 1,000 out-of-town visitors and public access supported by sponsors such as Tootsies. The open is free to the public, featuring vendors, concerts, and food.
