Boy Survives Two Days Clinging to Capsized Boat Before Dramatic Rescue
xCruzo Brief
Derek Parker Aghnaanga survived roughly two days clinging to an overturned skiff in Alaska’s icy Bering Sea after a fishing trip went wrong last Friday. The teenager’s older brother and cousin died, but Aghnaanga remained on top of the upturned boat until rescuers found him Monday near St. Lawrence Island. A fishing boat hoisted him to safety, and video showed crew members throwing a line to pull the skiff close enough to lift him into a rescue basket. The captain of The Northwest Explorer said the teen endured night conditions and water temperatures of about 10°C. The U.S. Coast Guard searched after family reported the three missing.
