The Royal Navy wants SSN-AUKUS to replace the Astute-class attack submarines, but timelines could be tight. The Astute fleet is already facing availability issues tied to maintenance problems, at times leaving all five commissioned boats unavailable. Britain must also balance competing priorities: finishing remaining Astutes, building four Dreadnought SSBNs, and starting SSN-AUKUS construction. Work will be centered at BAE Systems in Barrow-in-Furness, with Rolls-Royce Submarines providing nuclear propulsion. Service is hoped for in the late 2030s.
