Underwater grasses in the Chesapeake Bay—submerged aquatic vegetation (SAV)—are difficult to notice but play an outsized role in water quality and marine habitat, according to Maryland resource agencies. Rooted in shallow, sunlit waters, SAV needs clear water for sunlight to reach it; sediment and nutrient-driven algae block that light. The Maryland Department of Natural Resources says declines in water quality from excess nutrients and sediment have caused major SAV losses. After heavy rains in 2018, underwater grass acreage dropped sharply in 2019 and 2020 as runoff brought additional pollution. Habitat-wise, scientists report about 30 times more juvenile blue crabs in grass beds than in areas without them, making SAV critical for Maryland’s fishing and local ecosystems.
