Chinese Coast Guard Ramming of Philippine Boat Escalates South China Sea Tensions

Tensions in the South China Sea escalated Friday after a Chinese Coast Guard vessel collided with a Philippine government ship, an incident captured on video and met with sharply different accounts from Manila and Beijing. The BRP Datu Magat Salamat was delivering fuel to Filipino fishermen when the collision occurred at 11:13 a.m., about 54 nautical miles from Palawan province, within Manila’s claimed exclusive economic zone. Philippine footage showed crew members shouting “Brace for impact!” and later damage including bent railings, damaged supports and debris; no injuries were reported. Philippine officials accused Beijing of intentionally ramming the civilian vessel during a humanitarian mission. China denied this, saying the Philippine ship accelerated to cut across the Chinese vessel’s bow near Sabina Shoal. The U.S. weighed in, with Ambassador Lee Lipton saying Washington strongly condemns the deliberate ramming.
