Dense fog in Penghu causes fishing boat accidents, flight cancellations | Taiwan News | Jun. 22, 2026 15:14
Dense fog in Penghu disrupted travel Sunday morning, reducing visibility to below 100 meters and contributing to two fishing boat accidents alongside flight cancellations. Six domestic flights were canceled, and two separate incidents involved vessels traveling between Magong and Xiyu to sell catch: one struck a bridge pier and another ran aground on a shallow reef. All nine crew members were reported safe, though both boats were damaged and towed to Xiyu Dock for repairs. The Penghu Meteorological Station said warm air interacting with cold seawater, combined with southerly winds, likely caused the fog. Visibility improved after 7 a.m. as temperatures rose, and operations later returned to normal; the Penghu County Government arranged added air and updated aircraft capacity via Uni Air and Mandarin Airlines.
