Deputy Saves Wheelchair-Bound Grandfather From Shark-Filled Waterway
xCruzo Brief
Bill Von Herbulis, a 72-year-old who says he won’t let life in a wheelchair stop him from fishing and checking crab traps at his Florida marina, became the one who needed rescuing on Sept. 27. Sgt. William Leven is expected to receive a Lifesaving Award after plunging into shark-filled water during feeding time and lifting Von Herbulis to safety over sharp oyster shells and barnacle-covered dock pylons. The Volusia County Sheriff’s Office shared video of the rescue on Facebook the next day, praising the sergeant’s rapid response. Von Herbulis said the incident barely affected his routine: “I was back the next day.”
