Missouri is set to adopt a version of “Bentley and Mason’s Law,” joining eight states with similar measures, Spectrum News reported. Scheduled to take effect Aug. 28, the law requires a convicted impaired driver who kills a parent or legal guardian to pay restitution so the children left behind can be supported. The proposal stemmed from Cecilia Williams after an April 2021 crash in Missouri in which a suspected impaired driver killed her son, daughter-in-law and four-month-old grandson. Williams said she later obtained custody of Bentley and Mason. The report also referenced other DUI-related cases, and quoted Missouri State Highway Patrol details from a separate incident involving David Thurby. The new rule links wage garnishment for restitution to help children until age 18.
