Family shattered after 3-time deported illegal immigrant allegedly blew through stop sign, roiling House race
A House race in North Carolina’s 1st congressional district turned sharper after a crash allegedly tied to a man deported three times. The article says Mexican national Jaime Santiago Corona, described as having been deported in 2019, 2023 and 2024, allegedly ran a stop sign west of Vanceboro and killed a 6-year-old girl, Calli Toler, last week, about a mile from the district line. It also states Corona had a history that included driving while intoxicated and that he was driving on a revoked license when he crashed into the Tolers on Warren Jones Road near US-17. The family members who survived—Toler’s mother and sister—were treated at a Greenville hospital, according to the report. Republican candidate Laurie Buckhout, seeking a rematch against incumbent Democratic Rep. Don Davis, linked the case to immigration enforcement, while Davis said federal immigration laws must be enforced for “safe communities.” Authorities indicated they plan to cooperate with ICE.
