More than 53,000 immigrants have been deported or repatriated by South Africa in a crackdown details a rapid enforcement effort tied to rising tensions over illegal migration. South African officials said authorities have deported or repatriated more than 53,000 African immigrants in just one month, with Justice Minister Mmamoloko Kubayi stating that over 80% were from Malawi. The government did not specify how many were deported versus those who accepted voluntary repatriation. Police reported arresting 350 people connected to public violence, intimidation, and unauthorized immigration checks by civilians attempting to force migrants to show documents. Officials are investigating at least three migrant deaths, two from Mozambique and one from Malawi, and Nigeria said two of its citizens were killed, a claim South African authorities denied. South Africa’s President Cyril Ramaphosa recently announced plans to strengthen border security and urged against vigilantism, amid protests including one held on June 30.
